DRUG ABUSE
Conscientization or critical conscious is a popular education and social concept developed by Brazilian pedagogue and educational theorist Paulo Freire.  It focuses on achieving an independent understanding of the world, allowing for the perception and exposure of social and political contradiction.
This concept can be adopted within a high school class curriculum.  A high school can engage his/her students in this process by participating in social education training sessions, and then facilitate dialogues within the class.  These dialogues will encourage students to engage in the process of conscientization by thinking critically about their lives and the way in which they have been socialized.
Here as part of the revised B.Ed curriculum 2017-2019, the teacher trainess have to undertake a conscientization programme for the partial fulfillment of securing B.Ed degree.  Any subject could be chosen for this and thus here we took the topic “DRUG ABUSE”.
This endeavor got appreciated by the school authorities and we could take the class well.  This topic seemed to be relevant and informative especially among school going children as they are the next responsible citizens and due to the increasing member of reporting cases on Drug Abuse.

DRUG ABUSE
Drug abuse is a complex phenomenon which has various social, cultural, biological, geographical, historical and economic aspects.  The disintegration of the old joint family systems, absence of parental love and care in modern families where both parents are working decline of old religious and moral values etc. lead to a rise in the member of drug addicts immediate environment, who take drugs to escape hard realities of life.  Drug use misuse or abuse is also primarily due to the nature of the drug abused, the personality of the individual and the addicts immediate environment.
Adolescence drug abuse is one of the major areas of concern in adolescent and young people’s behavior.  It is estimated that in India, by the time most boys reach the ninth grade about 50% of them have tried at least on the gateway drugs.  The alarming trend of adolescence taking drugs including sniffing petroleum products, cigarettes, alcohol and even smoke has caught up across all economic strata.  At this juncture, teachers, teacher educators and educational institutions have a significant role stand act an excellent platform to explore their commitment to the society by creating awareness and conscientizing the prevailing social evils which affects the whole humanity.

NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE
Children’s are trusting of adults and can easily be influenced.  Teachers can be the role models for students and dissuade them from abusing drugs.  This is all the more important if young people do not have supportive families to guide them.
Young people may have to contend with the pressures associated with experimentation and with life in a complex and demanding society.  Drug abuse is basically a mechanism to cope with or escape from feelings of insecurity.
Help the students realize that they are not alone in facing these challenges and that there are a variety of healthy ways of confronting them.  It takes confidence to say no to drugs.  Teachers can help build a child’s self esteem and strengthen inter-personal skills.

OBJECTIVES
v To conduct drug addiction consequences awareness.

v To find out the effectiveness of the strategy for conscientizing adolescents against drug addiction.

REPORT ON CONSCIENTIZATION PROGRAMME
REFLECTION ON PLANNING
As a part of our B.Ed curriculum, we the teacher trainees have to organize a conscientization programme.  It is an individual activity.  So I decided to conduct an awareness program on the topic “DRUG ABUSE” for the ninth standard students of SVPMHS Vadakkumthala on 07/12/2018.
Drug Abuse, as a psychological, Social-Biological issue, in adolescence is one of the most critical issues for society now a days.  We are only developing in the areas of education and technology.  So the future generation should aware of the Drug Abuse.  This awareness programme on “DRUG ABUSE” may help the students to think about their life and appropriate decision makings in terms of future actions and interventions.

REFLECTION ON ACTION
With the concern of Headmaster Sri. Suresh Sir, I invited everyone to the smart classroom for the programme after the luch for 2.00 pm.  So Suresh Sir inaugurate my class.  We started the programme with the presence of the almighty God with prayer.
At 2 pm Suresh Sir inaugurated the programme.  He interacted with the students about the topic “DRUG ABUSE”.
Then he invited me to continue the topic.  I started my class with showing a video on drug abuse and also include some picture to show the bad effects of drug abuse.  Students keenly watched the video.  Also I provided questionnaire to the students about the same topic.  Students listened the class eagerly.
Then I invited the concerned teacher Sheeja Mam to deliver the felicitation.  Teacher emphasis the measures to avoid during drug abuse.  After her speech I invited the class leader to deliver the vote of thanks.

FEEDBACK
The students actively co-operated to conduct the programme.  The Headmaster and the Mentor Sheeja teacher also supported me.  The teacher has given a good introduction to the students.  The students too have given good opinion about out programme.

FINDINGS
v Only 30% of the students attend the awareness programme.
v 84% students are aware of the fact that drug addiction causes serious health issues.
v 60% students are unaware of the fact that drug addiction affects social and emotional balance of a person.
v 54% of the students are in the opinion that education is needed against drug addiction.
v 60% of the students were unaware about the de-addiction centers.
v 2% of the students said that their friends and relatives forced them to use drugs.
v 78% of the respondents agreed that drugs are supplied by mostly by Youth.

This programme helps the students can realize that they are not alone in facing these challenges and that there are a variety of healthy ways of controlling them.
