DRUG
ABUSE
Conscientization or critical conscious is a popular
education and social concept developed by Brazilian pedagogue and educational
theorist Paulo Freire. It focuses on achieving
an independent understanding of the world, allowing for the perception and
exposure of social and political contradiction.
This concept can be adopted within a high school
class curriculum. A high school can
engage his/her students in this process by participating in social education
training sessions, and then facilitate dialogues within the class. These dialogues will encourage students to
engage in the process of conscientization by thinking critically about their
lives and the way in which they have been socialized.
Here as part of the revised B.Ed curriculum
2017-2019, the teacher trainess have to undertake a conscientization programme
for the partial fulfillment of securing B.Ed degree. Any subject could be chosen for this and thus
here we took the topic “DRUG ABUSE”.
This endeavor got appreciated by the school
authorities and we could take the class well.
This topic seemed to be relevant and informative especially among school
going children as they are the next responsible citizens and due to the
increasing member of reporting cases on Drug Abuse.
DRUG ABUSE
Drug abuse is a complex phenomenon which has various
social, cultural, biological, geographical, historical and economic
aspects. The disintegration of the old
joint family systems, absence of parental love and care in modern families
where both parents are working decline of old religious and moral values etc.
lead to a rise in the member of drug addicts immediate environment, who take
drugs to escape hard realities of life.
Drug use misuse or abuse is also primarily due to the nature of the drug
abused, the personality of the individual and the addicts immediate
environment.
Adolescence drug abuse is one of the major areas of
concern in adolescent and young people’s behavior. It is estimated that in India, by the time
most boys reach the ninth grade about 50% of them have tried at least on the
gateway drugs. The alarming trend of
adolescence taking drugs including sniffing petroleum products, cigarettes,
alcohol and even smoke has caught up across all economic strata. At this juncture, teachers, teacher educators
and educational institutions have a significant role stand act an excellent
platform to explore their commitment to the society by creating awareness and
conscientizing the prevailing social evils which affects the whole humanity.
NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE
Children’s are trusting of adults and can easily be
influenced. Teachers can be the role
models for students and dissuade them from abusing drugs. This is all the more important if young
people do not have supportive families to guide them.
Young people may have to contend with the pressures
associated with experimentation and with life in a complex and demanding
society. Drug abuse is basically a
mechanism to cope with or escape from feelings of insecurity.
Help the students realize that they are not alone in
facing these challenges and that there are a variety of healthy ways of
confronting them. It takes confidence to
say no to drugs. Teachers can help build
a child’s self esteem and strengthen inter-personal skills.
